CNN —A viral video clip circulating online suggested that actor Robert De Niro had confronted pro-Palestinian protesters in New York City, but CNN has learned that the actor was actually filming a TV show. In the video posted onto social media, De Niro is seen yelling, “This is not a movie! (No protesters can be seen in the video.) A Netflix spokesperson told CNN that the video was shot “during an on-location rehearsal” for the series “Zero Day,” on April 27. In the video, “Civil War” actor Jesse Plemons – who co-stars with De Niro in the series – is seen standing in the background.

The recent late-life critical embrace of a generation of underappreciated major female artists — the 91-year-old nude self-portraitist Joan Semmel, the 84-year-old visual artist and sculptor Barbara Chase-Riboud, the 87-year-old performance and multimedia provocateur Joan Jonas and the Cuban-born abstractionist Carmen Herrera, who died two years ago at age 106 — has brought a measure of satisfaction to the sculptor Arlene Shechet. Also, a good bit of eye rolling. “C’mon now, Carmen had to get to her 90s before people cared,” she says, standing in her roughly 5,000-square-foot Kingston studio, about two hours north of New York City, on a rainy late spring morning, attired in her usual work garb of a knitted cap and an indigo Japanese frock coat now used as a smock, flecked with clay dust and wood chips. “Everyone says ‘Oh, isn’t it so great that these women are getting their due?’ Actually, when you think about it, it’s pretty horrifying.”The 75-year-old Shechet — bemused, kinetic, indomitable — is not in danger of having to wait to be recognized, but you might not realize that, given the furious pace at which she continues to make art. Although she spent the early years of her career teaching at her alma mater, the Rhode Island School of Design, and at Parsons, and raising two children, now in their 30s, in an 1866 building in TriBeCa, continuing to sculpt in a basement studio after their bedtime, she has made up for lost time.

It always seems to start the same way. I’ll beat you up! A brush-fire confrontation between strangers in a subway loudly skyrockets toward hostility before anyone else is even sure who is yelling at whom, or why. Do something about it! A moment so familiar that other passengers hardly bother to look up from their phones or pause their conversations.

CNN —At 6’3” and 295 pounds, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce often towers over other people. How a father can affect a sonSo many people now know that Jason Kelce is an all-pro center who had an illustrious 13-year career. But now as a father myself, I understand it in the same way that Jason understands a father’s support. I’ve seen the research that says children with involved fathers do better in school, have higher self-esteem, and just like Jason Kelce, show empathy. While I know those things, watching real-life dads like Jason Kelce and even more so, Ed, is so important to me.

Tim McGraw — his name also the title of one of Swift's early breakout hits — delivered the game ball. Swift joined other Philly luminaries Patti LaBelle and John Oates as 2008 World Series anthem singers. Hackash said the team mostly worked through Swift’s family, including her parents Scott and Andrea, to snag an appearance. Her first Reading game was kind of a stepping stone to get something on tape to send to the Sixers. Former Sixers manager of game operations Kathy Drysdale said in 2002 that Swift’s voice caught her attention immediately on a tape submitted by Scott Swift.

Opinion | A Performance Review for President Biden
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Why So Many Americans Are So Down on Biden,” by Bret Stephens (column, Sept. 6):Sure, the president is old, but, boy, has the country improved. Foundations for the country’s future have been established (Inflation Reduction Act, Chips Act, etc.). C’mon, forget an occasional stumble, or less than polished speech — it’s action and leadership that should be noted, and applauded. To the Editor:All things considered, I believe that Joe Biden has done a fantastic job as president. And because we project our national identity onto our president, he does not sate our desire for a robust, optimistic leader.

C’MON DOWN! A few winning $150-and-under designs. Illustration: Mojo Wang“PLEASE SPEND no time on this silly request,” ordered an email that recently shot into my fashion editor’s inbox. The woman behind it wanted to buy a casual button-up as a birthday gift for her boyfriend, and was hoping for leads. The first was that the shirt be “hip but not too hip.” The second turned this “silly request” into my new Everest: Her price limit was $150.

“Obviously, the little girls that are going to see Barbie, none of them are going to have any idea what those dashes mean,” Mr. Cruz told Fox News. “This is really designed for the eyes of the Chinese censors, and they’re trying to kiss up to the Chinese Communist Party because they want to make money selling the movie.”The response on the right is not a one-off. For a generation of conservative personalities, weaned on Andrew Breitbart’s much-cited observation that “politics is downstream of culture,” Hollywood and other ostensibly liberal bastions are to be confronted head-on, lest their leanings ensnare young voters without a fight. Recent years have provided ample evidence, some on the right say, for a “go woke, go broke” view that progressivism is bad business. (Of course, there is no way to trace exactly what determines any movie’s success or failure, and many observers adhere to the screenwriter William Goldman’s axiom: “Nobody knows anything.”)“Barbie” cannot be said to have gone broke.

New York CNN Business —HBO has created a kingdom of hits, with none as popular as “Game of Thrones.” But “Game of Thrones” ended with a thud in 2019 when critics and fans were unhappy with the fantasy epic’s ho-hum conclusion (Bran Stark on the Iron Throne? Create more “Game of Thrones,” of course. Enter “House of the Dragon,” a prequel that takes place almost 200 years before the events of its predecessor and focuses on the Targaryen family. To put that number into context, season seven of “Game of Thrones” averaged 32.7 million viewers per episode, and season 8, its final season, averaged 46 million viewers. (It doesn’t hurt that “Game of Thrones” is pretty much like watching sports, albeit with more dragons.)
Trombone Champ is the newest video game players can't put down — even if those around them wished they would. Developed by Holy Wow Studios, the rhythm-based video game is similar to Guitar Hero — but swaps the guitar for trombone. The game, which was released Sept. 15, went viral this week after people online — ranging from video game reviewers to actual trombone players — began posting recordings of themselves playing it. He came up with the idea for Trombone Champ four years ago, inspired by traditional arcade cabinets. Dan Vecchitto, trombone Champ developerDeveloping the game was a relatively smooth process, according to Vecchitto, who worked on it on nights and weekends.
Though she has never quite achieved superstar status, Wanda Sykes has, over the last 25 years, steadfastly built one of comedy’s most impressive careers.
